Introduction to Wedging the Clay

 

Wedging clay removes air bubbles and gives it an even consistency, so it will hold its shape and structural integrity when fired. Clay shrinks when it is fired, whereas air expands when heated. So, if there is any air trapped in the clay -any tiny bubbles - firing it will cause an explosion, hurting not just your piece, but all the other pieces in the kiln, like a grenade.
