34. Art Deco (1913-1945)

What was it about? What were the goals?

Art Deco is short for the French "Arts Décoratifs", or decorative arts. This was a movement that sought to create a new, modern aesthetic in all decorative and industrial arts, from architecture to furniture, jewelry, cars and trains, and even home appliances. Stylistically these artists separated from Art Nouveau, exchanging the long flowing lines inspired by plants for simpler, flowing lines inspired geometry. Art Deco designs were bolder and simpler than Art Nouveau, although there are some works that blur the line. Art Deco can be seen as both a rejection and an evolution of Art Nouveau.
